Topic Ten: Images from the Little Prince (2)

Discussion Topic Ten (2010/5/10~5/16): Interpreting Images from the Little Prince

In the Little Prince,  the narrator of the story drew a sketch of the Little Prince from his memory and commented:  "Here you may see the best portrait that, later, I was able to make of him." As you can see, this is indeed a very lovely rendering of a little boy full of life.

After the Little Prince was gone, the narrator drew the picture of a special landscape from his memory, and described this landscape as "the loveliest and saddest landscape in the world."

Discussion Question: What does this landscape mean to the narrator and to you?

  1. For someone who does not know the Little Prince, there is nothing there. However, for me, the absence of someone I love is deeply felt in this picture.

  2. The landscape represents my Xanadu. The star stands for my dream which is hard to reach. But the light of the star directs my way to achieve the goal in case I go astray. As long as the star is still shinning in the sky, I would never give up my dream. My dream can be everything ranges from innocence to ambition. Once attaining the goal, I will change my targets and keep my dream shining in the sky. Dream is a kind of motivation pushing me moving forward in the whole life. The process of completing something could be frustrated and nerve-wracking; nonetheless, once I make it, the sense of accomplishment would be fabulous. That’s what come to my mind on seeing the words of the loveliest and saddest landscape in the world of the picture.

  3. The narrator has a close and intimate bond relationship with the Little Prince. He is used to the Little Prince’s company and curious questions. He sees the Little Prince as a dear friend. Therefore, when the Little Prince is going to somewhere unknown to him, he is greatly in pain so he draws the picture to commemorate him. The picture portrays a landscape where nobody is there but a star and spacious meadows. This is a lovely but sad place for the narrator because the Little Prince, who is once there, disappears.

The expanse of meadows gives me a sense of isolation and loneliness. At the same time it also gives me a comforting feeling because of the star shinning above. The Little Prince may still exist where naked eyes can’t perceive. After reading The Little Prince, I become friends with the Little Prince. He is curious and thoughtful. Thus, when I was going to finish the last few pages, I felt sorry for the Little Prince’s disappearance, too. The Little Prince is a informative book waiting here to be discovered.

  4. For the narrator, it means that no matter where the little prince is, the narrator will remember his valuable and wonderful time with the little prince. As long as the narrator looks at the star on the sky or the meadow anywhere, he will recall the prince who has got a strong relationship with him. For me, it means that no matter how long it is, there will be a person in the future waiting for me to fall in love with him. The star will lead my way to look for my Mr. Right.

  5. The author has a good time spending with the Little Prince. Therefore, when the Little Prince goes back to his planet, he is very sad. He will always remember the last scene he sees the Little Prince. The Little Prince disappears in the desert. Although the Little Prince leaves, in the author’s mind, the Little Prince exists in the form of star. When he misses the Little Prince, he can look up to the sky and see the star.
The desert is so big and there is nothing in the desert. The feelings of the author must be very sad. When the Little Prince disappears, there is something in the author’s heart disappears too. The author must have a sense of emptiness.

  6. In my opinion, the narrator may think he has nothing else but the little prince. He cannot find a true friend as little prince any more. He loves little prince very much. Thus, in his world, there is only little prince in his mind. To me, it means the star which guide me to the right way. When I am confused, the star will tell me the answer and guide me to a wonderful place. No matter how hard the process is, the star will still guide me through the difficult situation to a right place.

  7. To the narrator, the landscape means a place that he can stay and wait for the Little Prince's coming back. There, they had had a lot of memory. Besides, he can pray and talk to the star for not being so lonely waiting. To me, the landscape means a place where I wait for my true love. Someday in the future, the right man will come to the landscape and take me away from the loniness.

  9. I think that the star represents the place where the little prince lives. When the narrator misses him, he can look into the sky and find the little prince is just there. For me, the star in the vast, boundless land is like my real friend. There are thousands of stars in the sky, and I can immediately recognize my real friend who is always there for me. She shines brightly and gives me energy and encouragement when I am in need.

  11. I think to the narrator is a unforgetalbe view, this view isn't only a view, but also a person. I can understnd this feeling. If life is a bus, at each bus stop, some people would get on, and somebody would get off. In these people, some of them are step on our heart in different condition. I have experience of this kind, when I go to see a baseball game, I will miss the girl who I met there. When I read The Little Prince, I will have a memory with the classmates and cute Vinia.

  12. This landscape was a place where the narrator met and lost the Little Prince. The narrator had ever been curious about the Little Prince and heard many stories from him. They were good friends and cherished each other. This landscape was full of precious memories with the Little Prince for the narrator. However, this landscape was a dream land for me. If I want to achieve my dreams, I must have to overcome many difficulties just like travellers suffer from the lack of water in the desert, the chilly on the mountain and the big waves of the ocean. I will be more confident of facing those frustrations on my way to the dreams.

  13. The narrator may think that the picture is a beautiful memory for him. Although there is nothing in the picture, his life experience with the little prince is very precious. Through this picture, the narrator can lock his wonderful memory in it. As for me, I also think it is a good experience and recollection to the narrator. Moreover, I think the narrator may think it is good for the little prince to go back to his own world and live there forever for that is the right place the little prince should be.

  14. The star and the long distance to me are like the loneliness the narrator felt when the little prince said that he wanted to leave the planet. In the story I feel that the narrator and the little prince have a sort of imvisible bond together though sometimes little prince ask strange questions. But when the little prince was gone, I did think that the narrator felt it was hard to take. And then the picture might just express his feeling towards this thing. And to me, this picture is like the dream or goal that is hard to get to. Dream usually means something that is hard for someone to achieve. Therefore the distance and the space sort of like the long way to get to the top to me.

  15. The landscape means significantly to the narrator, because the star symbolizes the little prince or his planet. That the star is so far away implies the little prince still goes back to his planet, which make the narrator feel sad. It is so shiny that it implies the little prince in narrator’s heart is bright and important. To me, the bright star is just like my future. I feel hopeful and I can’t wait to start my career. I crave for making money as soon as possible so that I can bring my family to travel around the world. Though the star, my so –called the bright future, is still far away. I would make all my efforts to realize my dream.

  16. To the narrator, the star might make him think of the little prince and he could look at the star and think about the memory with the little prince, and sometimes his thoughts would change when he look at the star.
To me, when i saw this picture, i put myself into it, and began wondering, what a beautiful star it is, and the little prince lives there. And then, I found out the star,to me, reminds me that I have to hang on and use my imagination and creativity whenever I am doing something. What's more, it is just like my dream, and I want to reach my goal, but i cannot go further because I don't workd hard. Therefore, it also tells me that i should workd hard to achieve my goal and dream.

  17. The star in the sky reminds the narrator of the little prince who is very innocent. Whenever the narrator feels alone, he can just watch the star and it makes him feel that the little prince is with him. And for me, the star refers to the dream which I try hard to fulfill. Although it is so far that I am unable to reach right now, yet I believe that as long as I work hard and keep going on and then one day I can make my dream come true no matter how hard it is. At first, a dream seems to be far away because I have no ability to realize it, but I promise you that I will never concede to any obstacle which I may confront because I am a girl who will stick to her dream by all means.

  18. In the narrator’s mind, that place is where the Litter Prince arrives and leaves so the landscape which the narrator draws is both loveliest and saddest. The star is where the Little Prince lives and as the Little Prince says that the star will become different from other stars because he lives there.
When we meet someone or lose someone in a specific place, the place will recall the memories every time we go by.
For me, the star is the person that I love. I will want to see the person anytime and anywhere and I will think about him when I see something relating to him, just like the narrator will think of the Little Prince when he looks up on the sky and watches the stars.

  19. To the narrator, this is the place where he met with the Little Prince. Since their friendship was built up gradually, they became familiar with each other and got used to each other’s company. However, one day the Little Prince went back to his planet, which made the narrator be left alone. Although he missed the Little Prince very much, he always looked at the shinning star in the sky, thinking that the Little Prince would be there and never stay away from him. As for me, this picture gives me a feeling of isolation; however, there is a beautiful and shinning star like an important goal in my life to chase it. Although it might be hard to get close and would take lots of time and efforts, I think I can reach my goal one day if I work hard.

  20. To the narrator, although the Little Prince looked dead, he still believed the Little Prince was alive. the Little Prince existed in a very far planet. The shining of the star meant that the Little Prince will always look at the narrator forever. This friendship would not die. Even they must be separated away, but they both know that they will cherish each other ever forver.

To me, the star is some kind of things I have dreamed of. Maybe the road between me and my dream is still long. But the shining tells me never stop my footsteps. There will be some fruits if I pursuit insistently.

  21. I think this landscape means a lot to the narrator, because there is where the Little Prince appeared and disappeared on Earth. And the star in the sky just represents the innocent Little Prince who is shining like a star all the time. When the Little Prince left Earth, the narrator could not believe and understand the Little Prince's behavior, so he felt very disappointed also sorrowful, because they had already established the inseparable relationship between each other. Therefore, I think this is the loveliest and saddest landscape to the narrator. For me, the star just likes my dream which is difficult to reach. The long distance from Earth to star is like the long way that we need to pass before achieving the ultimate goal in our life, but I do believe that the star light will guide me and help me to overcome all the obstacles on my way.

  22. I think the narrator has a close relationship with the Little Prince. The narrator is just like the little prince’s friend or family. It seems that no matter where the little prince is, the narrator will always remember the little prince and the wonderful time with the little prince. Therefore, when the Little Prince is going to somewhere far from him, he is really sad. The narrator draws the picture to commemorate him, and the picture portrays a landscape without anyone there except the star and meadows.

  23. What does this landscape mean to the narrator and to you?
I think that this landscape means like the little prince to the narrator. After the little prince was gone, the narrator was very sad. This can explain why he said that it is a sad place. As for me, I think that it was kind of a lost to me. Why? Because when the little prince was gone, it seems like the dream and the imagination have all gone. This is a kind of lost which means alot to me.

  25. After the story we know, narrator has become good friends with the little prince .When u face ur good friends go,it's unhappy for this time. But the little prince came from the other planets, he wanted to go back to find his flowers and back to their home. Parting is always the most painful. If we have seen the star of the sky, the little prince maybe look at our planet over there from far away planet.

  26. What does this landscape mean to the narrator and to you?
To the narrator, the landscape represents a perfact land without destruction by people, without strong desire of people, without difference. The narrator has close relationship with the Little Prince. So, the landscape is the bond with the narrator and prince.

  27. What does this landscape mean to the narrator and to you?

Those who doesn’t know or doesn’t want to know the Little Prince may think there is nothing there. However, I lost my brother when I was only seventeen years old. Therefore, from the picture, I can feel touched deeply about the absence of my dear brother. The wilderness gives me frustration and a sense of lost. It seems that I can’t catch him and everything about him. Nonetheless, because the star is still shinning above the sky, it gives me a sign of hope that can console my loneliness. The shiny star for me means he is still around me even though he lives far away from me. I can feel he is still shining and living around me. And one day we can see each other again.

  28. As far as I am concerned, I think the landscape really means a lot to the narrator. Although this is almost an empty picture, it means that the narrator’s best friend, the little price, left him. The narrator and the little prince had a really good time together. The emptiness of the picture is a symbol that the little prince won’t come back again to meet the narrator. I think the narrator must be very sad. He can only keep the unforgettable memory with the little prince in mind. For me, I think the only thing I can see in the picture is the shining star. It reminds of my mom. She is the most shining star in the sky and also in my heart. She guides me everything so that I can behave myself and be a good girl.
