Topic Eight: Shuan-tzan as a Traveller

Discussion Topic Eight (April 26~May 2, 2010):

There are two important paintings in "The Girl Who Leapt through Time."
One of them is Shuan-tzan's portrait as a traveller on his way to ancient India.

Question: Why is this painting cited in this movie about time travelling?

  1. I wonder why this Chinese painting appears in a Japanese animation movie. Is it because Tang dynasty was a very influential cultural power? Or, Shuan-tzan was simply a very remarkable character through history?

  3. This animation film features a subject – love and courage. The male character from the future is perseverant and courageous to travel through time to a period when the paintings haven’t been destroyed. One of them is Shuan-Tzan portrait, which illustrates his traveling towards ancient India to worship and learn reverently. I think the personality traits the male character and Shuan-Tzan share are enthusiasm, patience and perseverance. The idea the playwright may want to convey is that when you are passionate and eager to protect something or someone, you get down to the work even if that costs you an arm and a leg.

The male character travels through time to observe the paintings that are destroyed in his time. Although Shuan-Tzan didn’t have the power to travel through time to meet the contemporary Buddhist Scripture writers, he travelled through regions from the East to the West. They both stick to their dreams and goals.

  4. The story of Shuan-tzan travels to different countries worshipping Buddhist Scripture is widely-known to us. Whenever talking about of the story, the image of spreading Chinese culture to foreign countries comes to my mind. Just like a kind of transformation.
Leaping through time is the same. Makoto subverts Chiaki Mamiya’s (千昭) perspective on past life. The meaning of the portrait is exchangeability. Traveling through the time could change something such as people’s thinking or people’s behavior. Future and past may have something in common but the change is unpredictable.
Makoto is an ideal example; she assumed she would never fall in love with her best friends. In the end, she found she cannot tolerate Chiaki’s intimate interaction with other girls. This is a sort of transformation in her mind.
Besides, I think the painting of Shuan-tzan represents the value of history. Chiaki had said the painting was burn at his era. Sometimes, the advance of technology and life would destroy precious history. History can hardly co-exist with advance technology. That’s why it is a tough work for governments or countries to protect relics. The movie demonstrated a message to protect these relics while developing economy or technology.

  5. This painting is about Shuan-tzan goes to Tibet to get Scriptures. On his way to Tibet, he must go through something very difficult. The author of this movie makes this painting to represent the hard time of time travelling. Time travelling needs some courage. For example, for the first time, the girl tries to travel through time, and if she is afraid that what will happen next, then she cannot succeed in traveling through time. Besides, every time she travels, she will hit something. However, she is still willing to do time travelling. Shuan-tzan also went to another city that he was not familiar with, which is like the girl in the movie does. And he is very adventurous and he is not afraid to be in an unfamiliar city.

  6. Shuan-tzan, who took a trip to ancient India to search for the Scriptures, went to understand the ancient life and culture through traveling the past time. But, he met a lot of obstacles and difficulties. Likewise, Chiaki Mamiya in this movie went back the past time to try to change something and she also faced some distress. The painting cited in this movie is in order to make a comparison and to make effects on all plots.

  7. I think the painting of Shuan-tzan is cited in the movie because that the story of Shuan-tzan is a kind of time travelling. Shuan-tzan went to look for the Scriptures. The progress was difficult but he knew ancient life and culture at the same time. The painting is cited because it is like the main character's story.

  8. Why is this painting cited in this movie about time travelling?

Shuan-tzan's trip to India is very difficult. The author decided to put this painting to show up that timing travel is very hard and so unknowing. It's need a lot courage and strong belief to to go through this travel. Time travel just as hard as Shuan-tzan's journey.

  9. I think Shuan-tzan refers to Chiyaki who travels from a long distance in order to fulfill his dream. No matter how difficult and hard the dream is Chiyaki as well as Shuan-tzan makes up his mind to realize it. It tells us that we should not escape from the obstacles which we might confront; instead, we should be brave and try to come up with a solution to this challenge. And it teaches us to perish our time because once it passed away, it would never come back again and even if you have that kind of ability to travel through the time, the outcome would be different from the previous one because everything is unpredictable. People can let their dreams come true as long as they seize every moment and never try to face everything with courage.

  10. At first, this picture is meaning wisdom and brave. But I think the movie use this picture not only the meaning, but also fantasy. I think it because of the story, The Journey to the West. When Shuan-tzan want to go to India, some apprentice with him and they tribulate with lots of difficult thing. So I think, on the one hand, the movie would like to use the picture to present the difficult of leading role want to get together, and the other hand present fantasy of the story.

  11. I think there are two reasons for why this painting is cited in this movie about time travelling. First, in the movie, this painting was an important picture in the ancient time but it was destroyed in the modern time. This painting must be meaningful and irreplaceable. During the period of establishing the Japan Empire, Japan used to send ambassadors to China for carrying Chinese culture into Japan in order to quickly develop the country. I guess it was also the time that this painting was brought to Japan. Therefore, the director uses it for representing the history of the whole Japan. Second, the leading actress in this movie lack of bravery, she always evades events happened nearby. I think that this painting about Shuan-tzan who traveled toward ancient India for getting the buddhistic doctrine is very inspiring, so the director chooses it in order to encourage the leading actress.

  12. I think that the director wants to make a parallel between Shuan-tzan and the male character. The passion that Shaun-tzan went a long long long distance to get the Scriptures ,just likes the male character traveled foward into time. I learned a lot from the movie. Both of them, they have the guts that I don't have. No matter how "far", how difficult their dreams are, they all never gave up!! That really impressed me a lot.

  13. I think maybe the road that Shuan-tzan went to India was very difficult and it took him lots of time to overcome it. However, he made it and brought lots of knowledge back. The photo may want to convey that he didn’t give up and seized the time to benefit people in his dynasty.

  14. Due to the story of Shuan-tzan traveled to India to search for the Scriptures is well-known to everybody. Therefore the meaning of wisdom and brave first came into my mind after I saw the picture.
I think that the male character is really a brave man for he is brave enough to leap through time to search for something that is in some unknown place that filled with strangers.

If I were him, I probably would not have the courage to go back there even if that picture is really that important to me.

  15. I think it is because that Shuan-tzan took a hard long jouney to India, and what he had done was such marvelous. During the jouney, he faced many difficulties amd he overcame them step by step. What's more, he had perseverance and he was willing to and held on his faith to conquer and achieve what he longed for.

  17. Through portrait of Shuan-tzn, this movie tells us that it takes courage and a lot of efforts to travel to other places. In order to better understand everything in the past, Shuan-tzn took a long journey to many places in search of Scriptures. Similarly, for the first time when the teenage girl used her magical power to travel through time, she didn’t dare to do it since she didn’t know where she would go. After using her talent for several times, she became familiar with how to use it and knew that she would hit something every time. In addition, the girl could travel through time immediately by using her magical power, which was totally different from the method that Shuan-tzn traveled on foot.

  18. In whole story, we know that there is a painting which can bring hope and comfort to people living in the future. However there are so many wars in the future time. To protect this the only one hope, time traveler brought the painting to the past. And this event appeared in Japan. What about other country? Maybe they have some treasures they would do everything they can to protect.

Therefore, I thought the painting of Shuan-tzn is Buddhist’s hope. Knowing that a lot of fights in China, maybe Buddhist wanted to keep their only symbol so that there is a Chinese time traveler to hide the painting in other country.

  19. Shuan-tzan has many commons with the main male characters. Shuan-tzan is patient and stick to his goal. He is not just talk by mouth, he use his actual action to prove his perseverance and courage to complete his difficult task. Similar to Shuan-tzan, the main male characters coming from the future bravely come to a strange past time for the devastated pictures. He alone does the time traveling and needs to tackle with every problem in this totally unfamiliar world. Despite a number of setbacks, they both persevered in their goal.

  20. I think Chiyaki was refered as Shuan-tzan who travels for a long distance to ancient India. In order to fulfill his dream, no matter how hard the dream is, Chiyaki makes up his mind to make it come true. It also shows that we should never escape from the difficulties we may meet in our life. We should always be brave and tell ourselves to look on the bright side. There are always ways for us to come up with a solution to this obstacle.

  21. Shuan-tzan was the traveler that he went a long way to India to get the scriptures, and in the journey were many obstacles. That means that Chiyaki travels from the future and he faces many difficulties in the time-traveling process. No matter how difficult the journey is, he gets the love of Makoto and fulfills his dreams in the end so when we face the problems, we shouldn’t give up and we should keep going on and do our best.

  22. The story of Shuan-tzan travels a long distance to India to search for the Scriptures is famous worldwide, and I think he is the greatest traveler in the history, because he helped the cultural exchange between East and West. On Shuan-tzan's journey, he had faced a lot of obstacles, but he never gives up and still sticks to his goal. He uses his wisdom and courage to pass all the challenges, and I think it is very impressive. Just like Shuan-tzan, the male character in the movie, Chiyaki travels a long distance through time in order to fulfill his wish of appreciating the drawing that had been destroyed by fire in his time. For me, both Shuan-tzan and Chiyaki are really brave, because one of them travels to an unknown city and the other one just leaps to an era that he is totally not familiar with. And next to the painting of "Hope and Strength", I think the painting of Shuan-tzan traveles to West conveys the message of "Courage and Wisdom" to everyone. These two paintings tell us that never afraid of pursuing dreams and goals in our life.

  23. We all know Shuan-tzan took a very long trip to Tibet to get Scriptures. And we also know that it took a lot of time and courage the travel that far distance. As far as I am concerned, I think the director wants to use Shuan-tzan as a metaphor, because Shuan-tzan is also a time traveler. Just like the main role in the movie, it really takes courage and time. When the time travelling happened, the main role has to fall down for many times to go back to the time she wants. Furthermore, she has to be brave, because she isn’t sure whether she can come back to the time she belongs to now. So in my opinion, I think the director wants to use Shuan-tzan as a symbol of the main role.

  24. Why is this painting cited in this movie about time travelling?

I think the reason why this Chinese painting appears in a Japanese animation movie is Tang dynasty was a very influential cultural power. I once saw a documentary movie which discussed about the Tang dynasty’s influention on Japanese. Tang dynasty’s culture, music, clothing, religion or well-known people all passed into Japan. Besides, at that time Tang dynasty was stronger than Japan, so the emperor in Tang asked Japan to sign a treaty to tribute money to Tang. Besides, Buddhism was prosperous in Tang and passed into Japan. As a result, Shuan-tzan traveling to India for Buddhism was regarded as a very remarkable character through both Tang dynasty’s and Japan’s culture.
